Description

Background

Innovate UK and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport is jointly investing up to £0.5m to help UK companies establish new Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) in the area of cyber security. The funding is aimed at supporting collaborations between HEIs and SMEs.

This initiative will support KTP projects to enable SMEs in the cyber security sector to access research-driven knowledge and capability from academia to help them access strategic opportunities, tackle significant challenges they might be facing and support the development of new innovative processes and solutions.

Specifically the Cyber KTP will:

  • Enable companies to be able to access more quickly the cyber security expertise they need to be able to solve critical challenges.
  • Showcase the value and capability, which the UK cyber security academic sector can bring to help solve problems within businesses.
  • Allow companies to access new strategic developments that can support their economic growth
  • Help plug the skills gap particularly in specialist areas within the sector.
  • Boost the growth of the cyber security sector through new strategic businesses and/or products.

The Cyber KTP will not define the type of projects or areas within cyber security that could be supported so as not to stifle innovation.

Projects should be in support of a significant CYBER SECURITY challenge or opportunity being faced by the business and support the growth of the business.

It is anticipated that a cyber KTP will meet one or more of the below criteria:

  • Be transformative and focus on an area of cyber security that will help address an industry challenge and contribute towards an increase in the UK’s overall capability.
  • Support the business to develop a new or advance an existing cyber security product, process or service that can create competitive advantage for them.
  • Support the business to access a new opportunity that can help increase its overall capability or portfolio.
  • Support the growth of the business in a tangible and quantifiable way and allow it to realise and increase its domestic market and / or export potential.

Out of scope:

  • Projects in areas not related to cyber security
  • Do not demonstrate significant innovation opportunity
  • Can be classed as business as usual.
  • Used to fill normal skills needs which a business is facing

UPDATE

We are pleased to announce that the agenda is now available for the Cyber Security KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) networking and briefing event on 5 Nov 2015, at the TechnoCentre, Coventry University.

We are delighted to announce that Austen Okonweze, Assistant Director for Cyber Security and Resilience, Digital Economy Unit at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), will be delivering a keynote presentation to situate the £500k KTP investment within the DCMS department’s wider aspirations.

We are also delighted that Dr Ian Brotherston, KTP Programme Manager at Innovate UK, will be presenting on the KTP scheme, how it works, and how to put together a successful proposal.

The main part of the day will consist of structured and open networking sessions to promote partnership building. There will be some facilitated speed networking sessions and plenty of time to build new working relationships during extended lunch and coffee breaks.

To promote the effectiveness of the networking sessions, we are looking for delegates to deliver a short 3 minute pitch on the day to cover who they are are, priority areas of interest, what they can offer and what they are looking for in a partner.

Please could any delegates who wish to take the opportunity for a 3 minute pitch get in touch with me ASAP to reserve a slot. Slides are not essential but if you wish to use slides, no more than 2 please. Timings will be strictly enforced so please do not exceed the 3 minute limit.

To reserve a slot or if you have any other queries, please contact robin.williamson@ktn-uk.org.
